- roles of optimates and populares?

all I know about the optimates and populares is the Optimates were the old established order which wanted the Senate to govern and the Populares was led by what the people wanted – i.e. popular opinion….

also that the optimates waited for their moment of revenge against Caesar. it came after Pompeius, as sole consul, had settled things down in Rome with his troops. the senate wanted to use Pompeius against Caesar to destory the coalition, and to ensure their own power and after the conference at Luca, Pompeius supported Caesar by prolonging his command in Gaul for another 5 years, but no longer.

But what about the populares? what were their roles? o_O

Think back to who exactly the populares included, when its inception came to be 'acceptable', what happened to them, and ultimately what was their impact on the Roman socio-political sphere.

*hint: Gracchi to Sulla* ;)
