Hi,

I've just got a quick question...

When I am reading the standard potentials sheet to find out which metal is oxidized and which is reduced in glavanic cells, the on that has the higher voltage (regardless of positive or negative) is reduced. Is this correct? I am just double checking...

The voltage produced by the cell.

You know the voltages they give you on the side next to the reduction equations?

The higher up it is on the table the easier it is for it to oxidise and the lower the easier it is for it to undergo reduction. It doesnt have anything really to do with the number associated to the metal.

The Data Sheet provided by BOS are Reduction potentials (EG: Zn2+ + 2e- <-> Zn ). The more negative (lower number) the more likely it'll oxidise. The more positive the (higher number) the more likely it'll reduce.

When I mean higher number, I mean higher voltage.
