in the trial one of the question was ... in your study of motor and generators, you learnt about Edison and Westinghouse from a secondary source ... assessed the reliability of your sources ... 3 marks

for these type of questions what are you meant to write to get the full mark ... seriously i cant believe physics have these kind of questions in it...

Its there because there was a similar question in last years HSC that was worth 6 marks. It is part of the skills section, 9.1. Make sure you read through that section.

Guess at marking.

Use a variety of sources. Web, text books etc.
Summarise data from the variety of sources and compare information between sources to ensure reliability.
Check the reliability of the sources by checking credentials of authour, source, publisher etc.
Describe what you would have been looking for to compare the reliability.

Assess: usually means, state what you used, positive and negatives of those sources and then whether you agree or disagree with the reliability of each source and why.

If it is assess the arguments of those two men - state what they argues, positives and negatives for each, how they contributed to current scientific knowledge and then your agreement and a reason for that.

Something like that.

Oh, and the reason for having such questions and fewer mathematical ones. One reason I can see is that scientists do need to be able to justify themselves and weigh up arguments and come to conclusions. They need to be able to convince others (usually the bean counters) to give them money and resources to conduct their research and R&D.
