what is a 'passivating metal'. I havent heard of this term until recently.

A passivating metal is a reactive metal that forms an unreactive surface coating with substances such as water and oxygen. So basically a metal that protects from corrosion and different reactions.

Metals that create their own transparent protective oxide layer to prevent further corrosion eg chromium, aluminium.
