For interest purposes mainly (i'm pretty sure it isnt necessary), but when sound travels between two mediums some is reflected while some continues through to the next medium.
My question is does some of the reflected ultrasound from the second medium get reflected back off the original medium as it travels back, and if so wouldnt this affect the image/results?

The anser is yes and yes. It is one of the reasons it takes so long to become a skilled operator.

In light it is the same reason, you end up with black ice on roads or coloured oil films.
