1. Why were spartans not allowed to leave sparta unless they had permission?
2. Sparta's attitude to foreigners eg Argos - they were xenophobic? i cant find much on this!!

With the first one, think about how Sparta was structured , no luxeries etc.. think about how the Spartans would have gone out to other cities such as Athens and seen all the jewllery etc and how they would have felt about coming back to their own city. After all they were a major power in Greece during this time, same with Athens but the difference in the buildings etc is tremendous.

The second question I dont really get what you asking.. butttttt all i can think of is maybe that you should look at how they felt threatened and the rival states like Argos maybe affecting the control that they held over the helots?
