Hi i am currently in yr12 choosing my uni prefrences for next year. I was wondering how you guys find BA at the moment and what is it mainly about. Because i am thinking of doing this as a back up as my first preference is B-Commerce. If i dont make the cut off point for B-Commerce, is it wise to do BA then transfer into it in the second year?, How hard is it to transfer into B-Commerce? and what are the chances of me even tranfering into B-Commerce in the second year as comparied to the HSC students of 2007?.

Thanks

Hey, I'm first year B.Arts/B.Commerce.
This is what Arts is "mainly about";

Areas of study: You must undertake at least one of the following:
Aboriginal Studies,
Ancient History,
Anthropology,
Arabic Language and Culture,
Arab World Islam and the Middle East,
Archaeology (Classical, Near Eastern, Prehistoric and Historical),
Art History and Theory,
Asian Studies,
Australian Literature,
Australian Studies,
Biblical Studies,
Chinese Studies,
Classical Studies,
Digital Technology and Culture*,
English, European Studies,
Film Studies,
French Studies,
Gender Studies,
Germanic Studies,
Greek (Ancient and Modern),
Hebrew (Classical and Modern),
Heritage Studies,
Hindi-Urdu, History,
Indonesian and Malay Studies,
International and Comparative Literary Studies,
Italian Studies, Japanese Studies,
Jewish Civilisation Thought and Culture,
Korean Studies,
Latin,
Linguistics,
Media and Communications*,
Medieval Studies,
Music,
Pali**,
Performance Studies,
Philosophy,
Sanskrit,
Social Policy,
Social Sciences*,
Sociology,
Spanish,
Studies in Religion,
Thai,
Yiddish**.

* Only available to students in specialist degrees.
** Not available as a major.

Part B: Provided a major is completed in at least one of the subject areas listed in Part A, units of study (including sufficient to complete a major) may also be completed from biochemistry, bioinformatics, biological sciences, chemistry, computer science, economic history, economics, education, environmental studies, geology and geophysics, geography, government and international relations, history and philosophy of science, information systems, mathematics, microbiology, physics, plant science, political economy, psychology, statistics, industrial relations and human resource management.

Competition to transfer into Commerce would be high. This means that if you do a B.Arts in first year you would probably need a distinction average (above 75%) to be successful in transferring to Commerce. Of course, it also depends on your UAI (they consider both UAI and first year marks 50/50).

UAI for B.Commerce 2005 = 93.5 I believe, and Arts around 83.
Have you considered doing a degree a bit more similar to Commerce? Like Economics?

O ok thanks.
Yea i have considered doing economics, i like the subject but i am more intrested in the whole commerce course, such as business and marketing. How are you finding commerce anyway is it good?, What suggestions do you recommend when choosing the course?.
But yea B-arts sounds fine, i might just do that for first year looks intresting.

I'm interested in marketing too. Keep in mind that you will need to do 11 core compulsory units such as accounting if you do a B.Commerce. They aren't everyone's cup of tea. I really struggle with them.
