Okay ... i just got my uai 89.20 - a little disappointed but oh well - and i am thinking of doing psych through a BSc. i have a few questions:

1) is there any difference between BPsych and BSc majoring in Psych

2) is it hard to get into honours at sydney - ie are there too many students to fill too few places

3) which is the better uni for psych - UNSW or syd

cheers

there is no difference in subjects between Bpsych and Bsci majoring in psych. You can do all the psych units in a B Science. Both B Psych and Bscience require you to do first year maths subjects. Really there isnt any difference in your actual degree except that a B Psych might give you a leg up into honours, im not sure (im just assuming it has to do something, because otherwise whats the point?). Honours is still open to any student in a B Science.

Honours at sydney is competitive, they say you will need a credit average to get in to honours, but in reality you will need a distinction average to ensure yourself a position, as so many people apply for it. Id see no reason why honours would not be equally competitive at other universities.

Ive got no idea which is the better uni for psych. Ive done first year psych at Sydney at really enjoyed it. Thats pretty much all I can say.

well a lot of our lecturers are from UNSW - read from that what you will

also before I started uni, people were telling me if I wanted to do Psychology, to do it at UNSW or Macq, not Syd - something about sydney being more outdated or something. I have some theory about how its because a lot of senior lecturers at Usyd seem to have a 'Learning' background, and thats a field thats lost favour recently. But I think the change in the Head of the School to a Cognition specialist (from UNSW  ) might have something to do with this being changed.

However, having done first year, I've had no problems with it, the lecturers are good, the course coordinator is very active, and they have one of the best online-learning (webct) sites out of the subjects I've done.

I think at UNSW their facilities are a little better, they just have things like lecture recordings and podcasts, whereas we don't.

Also I heard at Macquarie they teach an animal psychology module in first year, whereas at Usyd, its Abnormal (human) psychology. I also think one of my tutors said Sydney is stronger in the theoretical areas (?) whereas the others are stronger in certain biological and experimental fields (??).

Hope that helps (proibably not)

And the only difference between BSci and BPsych is that the latter you have to maintain a credit average and you do extra psych subjects in 3rd year (as in, you don't have to do as many subjects in third year to get a psych major in BSc). But... I THINK one or two of these extra subjects might be exclusive to BPsych. I don't think it means a lot though.

Does unsw teach animal psychology after first year, because I'm really intested in it?

Maquarie has been sounding really good for me, but it would be an hour travel each way to get there while unsw is like 15 minutes, so i do'nt know if mq is going to be worth it?

I got 93.3, so if I went to mq I would probably be doing Bsci(Psych) and if I went to unsw I would be doing adv science, I'm not sure what I could get into at usyd..so yeah, does anyone have any advice for me? I'm really confused
