i understand what puntuated equilibrium is...just for clarification in relation to darwin's theory of gradualism is where i am having the troubles...so is it saying that darwin believes that it occurs in long periods of time [formulating divergent and convergent evolution] whilst punctuated equilbrium says there are rapid changes in environment and therefore species adapt to the new conditions

is this what they are saying????

thanks and good luck tomorrow :)

Gradualiam is slow and steady change of a species over time.

Punctuated Equilibrium is fast change of a species over time.

I think thats very basic... I would elaborate but l'm drained at the moment :)

Normal evolution: Things occur gradually over time, it is a constant process.

Punctuated equilibrium: There are cycles of evolution and non-evolution, and during the evolution cycle things occur very quickly.

That's my understanding of it anyway.

fast changes would be stuff like sudden changes in temperature (e.g. ice age), overhunting (leads to extinction of species) etc.
