I know about the deal with reference texts but are prescribed textbooks compulsory to get? Is there a chance that a lecturer will tell you that they won't be needed?

They will tell you the following:

1) you dont need the textbook.
2) the textbook is not compulsory but its recommened.
3) the textbook is not compulsory but if you dont buy it, and study from it, your going to struggle.

4) also there was some subjects where by..you need to buy the book to actually past the subject. for eg, you need to do questions from the textbook for submissions in tutorials, and if you dont submit 80% of your tutorial sheets, then you fail...understand LOL

or, there'll be chances of the lecturer telling you that they're not going to teach you much and everything has to be learned from the textbook

Or they'll tell you it's not needed, but by the time its exam time, questions pop out from nowhere.

Basically, our rule of thumb for undergrads is - buy if you're not fully understanding the lecturer. This applies when lecturers say you don't really need the textbook, or it ain;'t compulsory.
