Can someone explain the effect of positive and negative marking?

I know they are different where positive starts at 0 marks and works their way up, while negative starts at full marks and works their way down

But i don't get how it makes a difference in terms of the final score

The HSC is meant to be "positive marked" (never heard of it being called that before tbh), because the marking criteria goes up from the bottom. It just means that you're rewarded for things you do, rather than penalised for what you missed/didn't do. However, I find that the system becomes a bit blurred for extended responses, especially for more subjective things like English essays, and it's hard to tell what the basis of marking is. I think the reason why some people complain about "negative marking" is just that some teachers are very strict and penalise you for little things, and don't seem to look holistically at the quality of the response.

I think in all subjects there supposed to positively mark. Sometimes teachers are strict and they don't give u marks cause it isn't exactly what they want. In writing based subjects they don't deduct marks for doing something wrong and it's about how many things you do right. But like math obv if u mess up they deduct marks
