Population of medicine hopefuls in across Australia (1 Viewer)

Hello to all of you brainy and smart people on BoS, just wondering if anyone can make a well educated guess on how many students would try out for the undergraduate paths this year? Yeah I know its hard to be accurate but someone must have an idea right hahaha

also how many people out of those would be deemed almost "assured?"? meaning high ATAR and above 90 UMAT

I think each medical school gets around 5000 applications (read somewhere but it may be biased to a certain medical school). Not sure. So I'd say a good 50,000 in Australia. Then they have to narrow it down to about 250 places I think depending on the medical school.

Assured would be an ATAR of around 99 and UMAT above 90 to secure an interview.

$I doubt 50,000 each year, I think $\sim 20,000$ sit the UMAT each year in the first place. UNSW's Medicine site says last year, over 3500 people applied for it, but I doubt it was in the 5000's, probably less than 4000, otherwise they would have said 4000+. These numbers (like 5000 etc.) include those who apply but subsequently didn't make the ATAR or UMAT cutoff too I'm pretty sure. Furthermore, we should note that of the 5000 (or whatever) that apply to various uni's, many of these people will be common applicants across uni's, so we can't simply multiply 5000 by the no. of uni's to obtain a good estimate (it will be an upper bound, but a too crude one I think).$

$Since 20,000 roughly usually sit the UMAT every year I think (this site claims 18,000: \url{https://www.myhealthcareer.com.au/university/umat-tips-nie}), and generally you'd need say 80+ percentile in UMAT to get interview, a decent approximation to an upper bound on the number of people who would get Medicine interview offers may be $20\% \times 20,000 = 4,000$. An approximation to the total number applying (or an upper bound on this) may be $20,000$ (the number who sit UMAT).$
