Ok, this is this year's HSC question, and my assessment task due in a week:

"Texts may show that the world of physical journeys involves unexpected detours.

To what extent do the texts you have studied support this idea? Argue your point of view"

Well. The statement/idea doesn't bother me that much. I'll probably overthink it, or whatever, but my real question is, how do you apply the "to what extent" part to this essay? Anyone have any ideas/examples?

I think it's just saying 'discuss how it does support it'.

Think about it, would they really want you to bring in a text and say, "no, it doesn't support the idea"?

By the way, what related material are you using?

"To what extent" means you make a value judgement as to how much (or otherwise) the question fits your understanding of journeys.

You would use qualititative terms such as "extensively" or "significantly" integrated into your thesis statement and topic sentences.

For e.g. some texts may embody unexpected detours as the denouement was unforseen while other texts may present intangible objects that serve as detours.
