Please help me with this question, i have completely forgotten how to do it.

In a club the ratio of women to men is 8:9...there are 160 women in the club...if 8 more men join in the club, how many men are there?

Can you guys show me what the working out would be for this, so i'd know not to forget it next time thanx

Edit - Sorry I read badly...

160 women in the club...

(9/8) x 160 = 180 men in the club

add 8 men, 188 men, 160 women in the club

ratio, as stated is 40/47 of women:men

From the ratios you gave as answers, maybe it's the CHANGE in ratio that they're after?

I don't do general maths...

Divide 160 by 17 (8+9)
Multiply that by 9 to calculate the number of men originally
Add 8 to that number to calculate the new number of men

That's 92.71

Im not sure how you'd round that, perhaps to 93 using conventional rounding, or prehaps round down to 92 because 0.71 isn't a "whole person"...goodluck

Hey thanks heaps for your help...but i'm just confused...doesnt the number of men have to be bigger than the women which is 160?
i duno i might be wrong... just let me know if you can thanx

and how would i turn the answer we got, back to ratios as in if the ratio was 8:9..what would it be now after the 8 men came in?

no thats wrong

divid 9 / 8 then multiply that by 160 = 180

180 + 8 = 188

just put it in your calculator as 160 ab/c 188 = 40:47 good luck!

Hey, one problem...it was a multiple choice question...and 40:47 isnt in there...theres
A) 16:9
B) 168:9
C) 14:15
D) 9:10

Yeh i know, your perfectly right, but their the answers. and the question is from a past trial exam, but duno where from coz the teacher has cut and pasted questions.

Maybe its what baiku said about it being the difference of the past answer, but the question asks nothing about that. but anyway i think i'm gona let go of this question before i go psyco.
