Hi all,

i am a yr11 student starting yr12... its that time where we get to choose a PIP topic!!!

Im being very indecisive and i cant seem to choose a particular topic which interests me a great deal.

i was thinking, has anything on the role of pets in the family been done? or alcohol in different cultures or across different generations? or the difference between the way myself, my parents and my grandparents spent their free time??

topics too broad? i would really appreciate any ideas as to how to approach these topics or similar topics....... or any suggestions for NEW topics!! anything at all.... Im stuck!

Thanks!!!:)

A girl that went to my school a few years ago did her pip on 'animal therapy' like animals as companions for the eldery and stuff.

The best way to pick a pip topic isn't by thinking 'what is a new and original and really interesting idea' but start by picking a topic (broad) that you are interested in, that you care about/want to know more/have personal experience (like if you were a twin, or adopted, or suffered from a disease). Then start researching into it. Chances are once you research into it, you'll find something more specific to do with that area you can focus your pip around. I think this is the best way because 1) You'll be more likely to hold interest in it 2) You will have done a fair bit of research to back yourself up ie. 'secondary research' and 3)You can bring your own personal stuff into (they like that).

For example I started by researching 'protests' and politcal dissent, then focused on civil disobedience and what it means today and in the past. Not the best example but do you see what I mean?

I think the role of pets in the family could be an interesting topic. maybe pets as the new children, or their role in socialisation - I found an interesting book recently about domesticated animals and their role alongside humans throughout history, although not directly relating to pets and the family, it could be an interesting or slightly helpful read. it is "A Perfect Harmony" by Roger A. Caras

I, too, am having trouble choosing a PIP topic. I was thinking about, maybe, something to do with mass media and monopolisation, or maybe the loss of local media in regional areas. Also, I thought about doing lying as a social convention/ harmoniser. but i dont know what i would be researching for this topic. Also, I thought about doing something to do with climate change/ sustainable energy, but i can't think of a good way to tie this into a sac topic?

any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

i think they'd like the local media in regional areas idea...it hits macro and micro levels and is topical (might not be in august next year though :p)

But seriously, pick something that you find interesting!!

And don't stress that you don't have a pip topic yet...just aim broad at the moment and your topic will naturally get refined...from just looking at the media and satire, my topic ended up being political satire as an agent of political socialisation
