How would you obtain the pH of fertiliser, or better how do you prepare a solution of fertiliser.

on another note what makes acid such a good preserving agent apart from delaying the growth of micro-organisms & bacteria

For soil and I believe would be similar/same for fertiliser is that you crush the solid fertiliser. Then use BaSO4 powder (since it's neutral and white) and sprinkle it on the fertiliser and put a few drops of universal indicator on it. Record the colour and compare to the universal indicator colour scale to determine pH.

Acids are often good to preserve food because the growth of micro-organisms and bacteria is limited when pH is too low since it produces conditions that are not preferred by bacteria and hence, they do not multiply.
