It has been a couple of years since I wrote my personal statement. From what I remember its pretty short, and you basically talk about why you want to do whatever course you have chosen and what you would bring to your course and the uni etc.
I think only mature age students need to complete it. I would say it is important...being a requirement and all. It's helpful to look at the guidelines on the net that relate to college admissions essays in the US. They have to do a similar thing.

Yer, the personal statement is just about your suitability with the uni, the coarse and studying in general and how/why you think UNDA is the place for you. Everyone has to write a personal statement, not just mature students. Don't forget it's usually the first thing they read about you...
