yep...u do the guess and check method

your result should end up being x=7.3651

to get this answer all you do is keep substituting numbers until u get as close to 6.9 as you can

Turn them into logarithms (much quicker). Ie
log 1.3^x=log 6.9
xlog 1.3=log 6.9
x=log 6.9/log1.3
x=7.36198

k im still not sure, n u wonder y im doing general math

k just checking
the x is a power to
so its like
1.3 to the power of x = 6.9

n u both got diff answers????

We got different answers cause he was manually checking it to decimal places. Mines more accurate and quicker though.

For mine you need to use logarithm rules. Ie log x^a =a log x

So you get the logarithm of both sides (this changes nothing except expresses them as powers of the base unit).

Then use the logarithm rules to get x log 1.3 (see above logarithm rule) then divide both sides by log 1.3 to get your answer ;)

i just read my text book n it says that the 'gues and check' method is the only algebraic skill available for General Maths students.

duz that mean if i do it ur way i will lose marks???:confused:

n i typed in my calculator log6.9/1.3 n it equals 1.782160098

but the answer is 7.36199
???

Ok Im not sure if you are allowed to do it, try asking your teacher next year. And the reason you didn't get the right answer is that you needed to divide log 6.9 divided by log 1.3 not just log 6.9/1.3.

remember in the HSC if u do logs in the general paper they will give u zero because u r meant to apply the general maths syllabus not the 2 unit one

I did preliminary mathematics and am now doin hsc general maths, n when we were doin this i got told that i couldnt use logarithms, had to use the guess method...even though i had learnt logs and i thought it was easier...pity that.:(
Well you could always use logarithms on your calculator then "guess" around the number (using whole numbers then halves, etc).

it is log6.9/log1.3 :)

use the log method to check your answer, and use the 'guess/check' method for working.
