... a Ba [Psych] is not a bachelor of arts, it is actually a degree within the behavioural health and sciences, they are the faculty you are affiliated with, not the arts faculty.

I took history107 this semester, and although it was pretty interesting, the workload was nothing compared to my science and psych classes

arts: 1 hour class a week, optional 1 hour lecture
chem: 3hours of lecture that u will fail without attending, 3 hour lab and 1 hour workshop a week

the reason i say the lecture is optional is because every week they do a new civilization, but you only get tested on at most, 3 of your choosing, so thats like 3 lectures you should attend, but if you really dont want to you can just write your essays on info off the net.
history didnt have a test either, just a take home essay[what a bludge]

I am not too sure what you can do with a ba besides librarian and teacher, but the fact is that BA students are much less employable

i beleive you should have said "maybe you should learn about a dip ed before making assumptions next time" because you basically proved my point even more, that a BA student is not even employable in the two things i thought they would be almost straight away...,meaning that they are even less employable

yeh dip ed, forgot about that. The point is that all the hardwork[ha!] spent on a BA [history] for example, would be wasted if you did not intend to further your studies into one of two fields
teaching
librarian
also archeology, but that is shit hard to get into and not very good pay

a BA allows for so many areas of specific study that allow for a whole range of careers: politics, history, specialist study areas etc.

i do B Media and Communications / B Arts, and i am at uni 12hours per week - thats 3 days of 4hrs of class. im aware that this is much less than most students - especially those in sci departments. but that doesnt mean i feel i am any easier off. i found it very difficult to get through all of the work that i was supposed to last semester, particularly trying to balance it with work was hard etc. im sick of this perception that arts students are so much better off and it's pointless etc. because personally, i've still found the workload to be strenuous.

Pretty much everyone will tell you they've got it the hardest of all, speaking generally rather than specifically about uni. Let someone think that you care for just a moment and you'll discover that they're the most hard-done-by person ever born.

It's all a matter of perspective, personally I can't piss on BA students because I've met some remarkably lazy and stupid people within my own degree who seem to get by fine. Doesn't mean we're all like that of course, and I figure it's the same in all degrees. Anyone who presumes the ability to judge a faculty's entire student body on either A) personal experience or B) inexplicable "fact", really does need a kick in the head.

oh i agree. that was my point. i'm sick of the generalisations that ALL arts students are bludgers, because personally, i found my 12 hours per week still a lot of effort with all the extra hours i had to spend on reading etc. and im not lazy by nature when it comes to school/uni work.

that being said i wasnt trying to say that arts degrees were any harder than degrees in other faculties, i mean, i dont know. i wasnt trying to whinge about how hard it is, i just sought to disagree with generalisations about all arts students.

I am not the most hard done by, this semester was good for me because in addition to my psych classes i got to take some science and some arts, i found science by far the hardest and arts, although interesting was quite easy with regards to a demand for my time [even considering essays, readings and so forth]

in my opinion legal would be one of the hardest, their readings each week are insanely boring and insanely large

BornDancer: iam glad you are doing an arts degree then, because if you are finding it demanding, anything else would probably kill you

AHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAAHHAHAAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHA

so you are judging me now and know my full capabilities as a student because you have done a couple of arts subjects?
i am doing a double degree, not just arts. i work four nights a week, and tutor one night a week. thats means 5nights a week i'm completely booked out. i said that uni for me was strenuous, and i say this mainly due to time management. the arts subjects i chose were heavily based on readings, as were my two bcm subjects, so trying to find time was the main issue, not that i didnt work hard enough or i didnt understand it. again, im not saying that an arts degree will be harder than anything else, but basically, you make a completely unfounded, and generalised argument.

Generalisations must be borne from some form of fact.

BornDancer: that double degree, it's not Arts/Education or Arts/Creative Arts is it?

It wasnt an insult btw so no need to take it to heart, but whatever
whats so funny? you basically said you have barely any time at all due to work and tutoring, if you were doing a science degree we would have to throw in anothet 10+hours a week so it seems i was right, it would kill you

for me, the readings were never an issue as i regularly read 1-2hours a night for enjoyment, all i do is replace that with my uni readings[which i do enjoy btw] and i experience no loss of time at all and iam usually ahead.

Maybe i have come across as heaps anti arts, its not quite the truth. If i didnt get into my degree, a BA heavily focused on history would have been cool by me. Even in getting into psych, i still felt a bit of dissapointment that i would have to give up history, so i decided to do an elective of it...

pitty i cant do that next semester, one of the reasons i didnt have arts as my main preference was because of job opertunities, and i really really didnt want to be a teacher or librarian [although archeology would have been cool, travel the world and pick up foreign chicks!]

just a note: the ad hominem arguements are really quite transparent, and wouldnt get you anywhere in a real debate

Just a note on this - not a debate, but the readings you have been given are not indicative of the readings given out for all humanities based subjects. For one of my subjects alone in communications at UTS I am required to do nearly 1000 pgs worth of reading a week from the readings on my reader. When you multiply that by four you can imagine how extensive the personal reading must be despite the fact that I only have 11 class hours in the UTS degree. That is an example of how an arts subject(and communications is arts) can differ from your expectations - this does not mean to say UOW will have those same reading amounts but merely that you cannot always use your experiences as a guide to what other people would have.

So what are you trying to say? That your uni is a more professional, better uni which challenges its students more through larger volumes of reading? That you consider UOW as some sort of illiterate second rate uni which doesn't require students to read and that our arts degrees are based on finger painting and eating crayons?

I think he was trying to say that readings for Arts consist of more to read than simply one to two hours a night.

But whether or not you've just put your finger on what UOW is... well, that's a matter of opinion. ;)

Poloktim is correct - my statement was regarding the arts discipline has a whole often requiring more reading than expected. However as I have not personally done the readings for any UOW arts subjects, I was not willing to make blanket generalisations or assumptions as UOW may set more or less than my own course for various subjects.

*looks* And to think this thread used to be about mugging...lol

There's only one thing that I'd be happy with regarding UOW. It's not shutting down the UOW forum, either (though it'd seem redundant afterwards). :)
