Well, the BA (Media and Cultural) degree would be perfect for you, if you don't intend on gaining a specialist look into any aspect of media. Its a very general degree which is really a taster for it, and useful for those who want to try the industry out, and concentrate on a pathway later on.

CUL01 - Media + Cultural Studies A (Undergraduate Coherent Study)
Stream: Media & Cultural Studies
Area of Study: Cultural Studies
Degrees: BA - Bachelor of Arts (UAC Preference 300142)
Offered By: Department of Critical and Cultural Studies,
SCMP - Division of Society, Culture, Media and Philosophy
Requirements

Obtain an aggregate of at least 68 credit points, including at least 38 credit points in units at 200 level or above, and at least 18 credit points in units at 300 level or above, which must include the following approved coherent study:

8 credit points from CUL300-CUL312 plus 6 credit points from MAS302-MAS307
CUL02 - Media + Cultural Studies B (Undergraduate Coherent Study)
Stream: Media & Cultural Studies
Area of Study: Cultural Studies
Degrees: BA - Bachelor of Arts (UAC Preference 300142)
Offered By: Department of Critical and Cultural Studies,
SCMP - Division of Society, Culture, Media and Philosophy
Requirements

Obtain an aggregate of at least 68 credit points, including at least 38 credit points in units at 200 level or above, and at least 18 credit points in units at 300 level or above, which must include the following approved coherent study:

8 credit points from CUL300-CUL312 plus 3 credit points from the range MAS302-MAS307 and 3 credit points from MAS308, MAS310, MAS389
Its not very structured, but your first year will include MAS104, MAS105 and CUL100, as they are the core units for all media students. After that, you can pick from a range of Media and Culture units which satisfy the requirements. Again you wont be able to pick the specialised units in 2nd and third year, unless you apply through a special quota.

My suggestion is to look here and try and find the units you want to do in third year and work backwards, trying to find the necessary requirements and pre-requisites for each. http://www.handbook.mq.edu.au/areaofstudy.php?edition=2005&id=20899

http://www.mqinfo.mq.edu.au/ubb/Forum14/HTML/000486.html Someone asking about transferring from BA M & C to a specialised B Media degree.

Additionally, at Macquarie, if you want to transfer its 18cp, and 3.0 average, which is a Credit average. (im pretty sure but check up with them just in case its changed)

to the above comment..

Who fucken cares.
Do what you want at the time and what you think you will enjoy for the 3/4 years you will be at uni.
Dont add law to it just for the fuck of it... too many people do that.

I know a lot of people who do law just for the sake of doing law, and none of them do v. well it would seem. But if he's interested, might as well.

Do you do law dazed? You seem v. passionate about the topic...

no i dont.
Im just one of those people that went to uni choosing a course because i was thinking about the future and money and whatever and then i transfered to something else because although it wouldnt pay well i knew it would guarantee me a job and it was a field i was interested in but there is a difference between being interested in something and being passionate. and now im transfering for a 2nd time to a media degree because i realise i cant do everything thinking about money or whether or not i am 100% guaranteed a job when i leave.

The Macquarie media faculty, being the one of the first in Australia (if not the first) to teach and offer the degree, has extensive links with various different facets of the industry no matter which you want to get into. Its proximity to the various networks as well as the location of the School of Film, Radio and Television are in no way coincidence.

A B Laws is as good as a B IT, B Comm-Accg, another degree and pathway to an already flooded market. The Media sector itself is not in anyway filled with oppurtunity, but its flexibility and wide choice of pathways allows it to harness the growing talent and pool which Australia is in fact producing. I myself am planning to do something within the Music or Film Industry (or both) with aspirations of one day perhaps being a teacher later on. Why? Not for money, not for bragging rights, but merely so i can do what i love doing. If i were to go for a job, i would've done a straight B Educ (Sec) / B Arts at USyd and be well on my way at getting a position at my old high school. Inversely, if i was looking for money, I would've continued as an assistant chef at Caterair before branching out into various restaurants who're family friends.

In short: I think the 'useless' facet of these academic or general degrees is a big misconception. They may be general, but there are very little facets within the Media industry which demand an extreme degree of qualifications on paper, it is moreso based upon your creativity, your flexibility and your own self worth rather than a piece of paper worth 50 grand.

It's good to know what you are passionate about, and then going after it. It's much better than thinking what might have been, when you're old(er).

Oh come on, a bit of tongue in cheek never hurt anyone!

There's nothing wrong with adding a sold generalist degree like the LLB. It'll open up great opportunites, not only as a solicitor/barrister, but in business, government, journalism, etc once they get past the 'i want to be the next tarantino' phase once they realise they are missing one key ingredient....talent. (This is in no way aimed at you, orignal poster!)

There's nothing sadder than someone finishing 3 years of uni with no job and no idea what they wanna do with their life.

I'm just being a realist folks...don't shoot the messenger.

Law a generalist degree that opens up great opportunites, not only as a solicitor/barrister, but in business, government, etc. And sure it's not for everyone.

But you could go travel the world or move into an inner city share house if you need to "find yourself" and be independent and try new artsy things. There's nothing sadder than someone finishing 3 years of uni with no job and no idea what they wanna do with their life.

Why would you do law, a 3-5/6 year course, and $$$ course for its 'general' aspect? Why not do BA? I think it's naive and extremely idealistic to assume that.

I guess it's more marketable than a BA in quite a lot of fields. The academic rigour of the degree compared to a BA in textile/jewelery making.

My original post is actually merely suggesting they do the B Media rather than the BA in Media and Cul. I've had past grads in both degrees tell me this...as well as certain 'people' when I was working at the PR department at uni.

The law thing...well if the poster has the marks it might be worth considering.

The problem with B Media is it forces you to do ONE major, rather than spread yourself out, like he's asked.

thank you all for your comments, to be honest i didnt even expect a reply so thanks guys. Asylum, i have been convinced! i was tossing up between this course and the uni of sydney media and comm course (a 98 UAI mind you - not gonna happen) and i have decided that this course is most relevant....i wish to combine this degree with work experience (something more important in the field of journalism, media etc.) here and there. i have work experience for a week with the sydney morning herald in august which is a great start. so, i have been convinced, i wish to do this course - it sounds exciting, flexible, challenging, stimulating, etc. i think there is a plethora of career opportunities, provided i make work experience happen with persistent annoying effort! if i don't get a career out of it (which i do doubt) i will get a job in a cd shop or something and write film scripts and music criticisms at home - dont matter too much - i am doing the course beacuse i want to, not because it has been recommended to me by my teachers - i am not a person who does psychology or law because it looks good - i am someone who will do something i will enjoy - put simply, i do not want my uni experience to be as dull as high school - gimme something i will like.

Asylum "Why would you do law, a 3-5/6 year course, and $$$ course for its 'general' aspect? Why not do BA? I think it's naive and extremely idealistic to assume that." - i cannot agree more

GoodToGo "JackWhite...I suggest u do a B Media/B Laws." - i do legal studies at school and my teacher says if you do not like legal then don't go ahead and do law at uni. i hate legal. thanks for your suggestions though, however law would bore me - it would certainly make me look more intelligent and hardworking but i just know i would not enjoy it...

thanks so much for all of your replies, thanks a bundle. i now have more of an impetus behind doing well in the HSC. the UAI for the media and cultural studies course is 85 as far as i know so i need a 90 to be nice and safe - achievable for sure! Asylum, thanks for the links as well. cool.
