To stoop to your level: most of the DVDs I own are those that you'd only ever watch on SBS. A lot the films I consider to be the very finest ever created are foreign and/or arthouse films that I'd even be surprised to see aired on SBS.

I watch plenty of movies on SBS (and for the record, I adored Lost in Translation). That a movie is subtitled does not automatically make it quality arthouse cinema. Believe it or not, SBS airs crap films as well - all nations are capable of producing them.

Lost in Translation is far from mainstream fare. I'm pretty sure it's an indie film and I wouldn't be surprised if SBS picked up the rights to it.

Yea I read this last night and got a bit of a chuckle. I enjoy hollywood crap alot more than alot of the more exotic films (no not porn... everyone loves porn). I do watch them occasionally, but I still think you often get a better job straight out of hollywood.

I think every person who loves Lost in Translation knows all about the opinions of its critics, so I doubt if one more hater really makes a difference to anyone. mikeee however isn't so much a critic so much as an insecure tryhard with very limited capacities to understand and to articulate any constructive criticism. They've showed a few American indie films lately. Donnie Darko, Virgin Suicides... another I can't recall the name of.

those who did not like this film did not understand it, and would therefore be better off with something on their intellectual level, such as bad boys 2, fight club, armageddon or donnie darko.

I personally liked it. Sometimes the feeling a film produces in the viewer can be more important than any plot or meaningful structure. I mean, if you think about it nothing much happens. But the film is stirring, and in particular placing it in Japan gave it a real absurd feel that I found both amusing and provocative.
