What stance/questions could be asked about
Mengele? I am considering looking at whether he has been demonised by certain recounts and whether his experiments had merit. How could I relate this to the syllabus?

The man deserves to be demonised....he was the devil. Even if you were to disregard the emotions behind those who right about him, all you have to do is look at his actions, his experiments, the man was mental. Have you read any of Robert Jay Liftons stuff? He's got a good theory that Mengele wasn't always like he was at Auschwitz, but he always had it in him to be so evil and being placed in Auchwitz gave him opportunity and means to let out the devil inside. If you look into wether his experiments had merit...its...really simple, because really, they didn't. However his contribution and insight into the human anatomy through his experments, particularly those done of the twins, may be of some value to you with the question. Dr. Miklos Nyisili who was actually at auschwitz working under the command of Mengele gives great insight into what Mengele did, and he in particular worked on the autopsies...so yeh...thats good for the merit/contribution thing...Nyisli's books' called "Miklos Nyisli, Auchwitz: A Doctor's Eyewitness Account"
