I'll break the Jap cycle here (sorry) and say that using "kuse ni" is a clever trick to impress the markers... the same as using "yotei" instead of "tsumori", am i right? :D

Actually it's got different 'shades of meaning' or nuances to simply 'no ni', but pretty much ;)

yaku ni tatsu = "is [of use, helpful]"

REMEMBER "tatsu" is a VERB (stand - tachimasu) and must be treated as such. A bit late for the speaking exam, but don't write "yaku ni tatsu" in a letter full of desu/masu. :uhhuh:

edit: shit! look what happens when you've been learning how to write Hindi all afternoon :p

(fixed - next post is correct)

hai, sou desune. inuyasha wa chotto nagasugi na node, dondon omoshirokunakunaru deshou. ni shuu mae ni anime wo mihajimemashita kara, inuyasha to azumang to fruits basket shika minakatta desu. HSC no ato de iroiro na anime ga takusan miru tsumoridesu.

Jogloran's saying that some anime with too much slang are not good, as compared to the ones with formal conversation. For the exam it's true, but you still learn heaps of vocab. After the exam, I think we need to learn more slang, afterall, nobody sane would talk like a book in everyday conversation...ͣ

P.S.

my mistake, i should've said "tango ga benkyou dekite"
Use "ga" with "can form" of verbs.

Mercury, do you know which encoding you used? Shift-JIS (the standard) didn't work, but EUC seems to come close. Could you tell me how you input your Japanese so I can make a recommendation to standardise? It's a pain to switch encoding :)
