Hi all,
I'm currently a yr 12 2026 student who's starting to look into university courses. My estimated atar is around 98. I'm considering uts law as an option as I've always aspired to study in the field of law, however is the university's prestige and ranking in law a problem compared to unsw and usyd? Will it affect employability and is it worth it to do? Other options that I've also considered is psychology at either unsw or ucat and medical imaging at usyd. Also, for unsw law, the current admission requirement is 97.7 + LAT, however now the LAT is no required for 2027 entry, how will the atar requirement be affected?

Btw, I've noticed that a lot of the lowest atar entry (local) for 2025 is considerably low compared to the required atar, e.g. i think unsw med is 96 or smt. Also, I would appreciate it if you guys could recommend me more uni courses to consider where atar requirement is 95-98.
Thanks

please do actuary 👉👈 for some reason it's the highest atar course even though back then it would've been like 80

I don't think I'd make actuarial studies in unsw or usyd though because they're 99+, and if I were to do it in uts or another uni, I'd rather do law

only unsw has actuary, plus i assume u have 5 points from hsc plus? so u only need 94 atar for it

This moght be a stupid question but wdym but hsc plus, sorry I'm not rly familiar with this yet
selection rank points if u get a band 6 in certain subjects like mx2 mx1 and related subjects. atar is not everything, most people will get the 5 points.

a course doesn't have 99 atar, it has a 99 lowest selection rank. (which may or may not include hsc plus)

ohh thanks, that makes sense. I was wondering what the difference was and how to get extra points. But then for smt like medicine would you still need like a 99 atar or get a lower one and get extra points?

how do u have ur estimated atar already? if it is based off your year 11 marks it is usually quite inaccurate
I based it off my yr 11 results and the school average. Based on that, I should get around 98. I understand it will be quite inaccurate though.

foremost - unsw med having a 96 atar as its lowest atar selection rank is most likely due to an equity admission (as someone has said above). i'm currently studying law at unsw and know people working w me in the industry who are also from uts, so anecdotally, i'd say uni prestige isn't necessarily a big barrier. at the same time, they're also insanely bright and tbh having decent marks is relatively more important than whatever uni ur studying at. with the atar requirements post-2027, i'm presuming that unsw's selection rank would be on par with usyd's? obviously take this w a grain of salt but without the lat as an extra requirement for admission, the only way unsw can narrow down student admissions is thru atar - i.e. higher demand = higher atar requirement (as opposed to the selection rank being 97.7)
