Compare the relative difficulties:

get 99.55 to get into Usyd law, or scrape into commerce with a mediocre 95.whatever and get a requisite D average for the first year?

Well under the previous system 95 and a D average would not have been good enough. It was 97 and a D average so it is not as easy as it sounds. Under the new system however, they may only look at your uni grades if they are very good and relatively better than your UAI.

Even so a D average is not a walk in the park. Many students who have other commitments like work or just want to take it easy in uni find it hard enough to just pass let alone get average D's. But yeah if your brain is suited for uni-style learning, it easier to get a D average than 99.55 in the HSC. But this isn't the case for everybody.

Then when a hundred 95 to 99.5 uai students decide they want to take that route too, what will you do? Do you really want to leave it to chance?
