We studied 'Cosi' at the end of last year and we had to write an essay evaluating what ideas were being explored within the text.
With the speech you should include an intro which introduces the themes you will talk about. Also tell them where it is set (Mental Institution), and the time in which it is set (1970's)
Themes
* Love and Fidelity (The different opinions that the characters have about love and relationships), use quotes from Doug and contrast them against the opinions of another character.
* The negative treatment of mental patients in Australia (The burnt out theatre symbolises the poor treatment of the mental patients).etc
* Madness vs Sanity (Are the characters really insane or is that just how the public perceives them?)
Techniques to show the themes include:
*Dialogue (Shows the characters feelings and raises the themes)
*Setting
*Play within a play structure
*Actions of the characters
* Lighting and how it reflects the feelings of the characters
Use quotes from the text to reinforce what you are trying to say
Set it out just like an essay and just change the words so it is easy to say.
Anyway, good luck with the speech.
