in theory, what would stop a school giving its student shit easy assessments, piss easy half yearlies and HSC trials in order to boost up people's assessment marks, which would in turn result in a higher UAI (so ive been told)

why would schools even bother setting hard exams, when in the end, most schools are more concerned with the results the school recieves, rather than the wellbeing of an individual student?

coz the board standardise the marks, taking into account really hard or really easy marks/schools/tests whatever.

coz then u people would think the hsc is 'piss easy' as u put it and treat it like a joke.
they usually mark it according to how hsc examiners mark it so u get the idea of what u are up for.

it all come down to the hsc mark anyway...so if u come first from the "shit easy" assessments and get lazy and expect the hsc to be the same then all is NOT going to end well....

Let me put it in this way:

the mark your school submits to the board of studies is used as a reference for assigning your "assessment marks"

Affinity is correct,

the assessment marks submitted by your school are moderated by the the school's performance in the HSC exam so that they are comparable across all schools.

In theory everyone can get 100% at school and all get band 1's or get less then 10% (but attempt everything at school) at school and get all band 6's

???

What could happen is if the school gave everyone 100%, then everyone would get the top exam mark as their assessment mark.

heres an actual example, at my old school, the eng teachers gave ~ 6 50/50s for Eng Ext2 major work however only 2 i think got 50s when marked by the HSC, hence no1 got 50 for their HSC mark.

Those six students would have each received the average of the top six major work marks as their moderated assessment mark. This average would necessarily be less than 50 unless all six of those top major work marks were 50/50.

yep thats why timshady's theory is flawed as it pulls the higher achievers' marks down and as a result, the whole schools results down ...as most ppl and newspapers rate schools by the number of ppl in a higher mark bracket rather than average marks

hmm.... yeah, i remember now, someone from BOS came and explained all this

the total of the exam marks in divided relatively over the proportions of school marks to become the assessment mark.
