Classes are not going to be cancelled for the day, and the rally will do nothing to change the governments opinion.

its better than nothin, i was told that the deans supported it.

if the gov gets rid of student unions, which vsu will most likely do, they may move on workers unions next. bastards
ummm Aim, workers unions are already voluntary. Also... they're not "getting rid" of student unions, they're making them voluntary.

KTHXBI.

p.s. for someone helping to organise a rally u sure do know shit all about what's going on eh?

One of the people who were harrasing others said they would be from 12 onwards so those who go to the rally aren't left behind. But god forbid I should not get something I paid for...

aim54x: By making worker unions voluntary? Oh wait they already are.

Oh what a clever strategy!
They know shit all people would come out on the weekend, or outside of class hours so they're going to do it right in the middle of day and give people a day off!
Oh the shame.

Aim: For a little history lesson, one of the main supporters of the abolishion of workers unions... WAS THE WORKERS. They were sometimes getting a raw deal by their union, and they knew it.
Guess what? One of the main supporters for the abolishion of student unions... IS THE STUDENTS! It's not just some evil liberal party scam to crush ur feminist collectives.

as in making them illegal (massive exageration to bring support for this rally), sounds a little extreme but those nutcases want to silence us, n it won't take much for the bastards to try this.

this rally is supported by the NSU if u have looked at the posters.

NSU is the biggest left winged organisation around. Have you considered most students dont vote at the elections? The elections arent representative.

If they wanted to make them illegal they could, instead they aren't they are making them voluntary.

Believe it not, but many students support USU (just as many students support VSU). However, I doubt that anyone in favour of the status quo would bother to make their presence known given the ever present BoS VSU patrol.

Don't deride someone for merely looking at this from another point of view. We are meant to be adults, after all.

Wow, nice, massive exaggeration is true :)

Now now... who's the nutcase? The person running around "OMG THEY'RE GOING TO MAKE STUDENT UNIONS ILLEGAL! SILENCE US! TAKE AWAY OUR RIGHTS! THEN THEY'RE GOING TO TAKE AWAY THE RIGHTS OF WORKERS!"

Or the people saying "We want to implement VSU to give students more 'choice' "

Generator: I'm deriding a "point of view" that is objectively wrong. Claiming that they're going to make unions illegal, then make workers unions illegal is simply wrong.

oh they don't realise wat they will lose. unionism is part of uni life, sure the fees r a bit (very!!) steep but if they were voluntary the union could not exist.

then u'll have the probs wit ppl reasonin dat they won't pay as they will b supportin slackers, by fundin a union that is meant to represent all students but funded by the slecet few. thus the union would cease to exist as inadequate funding would force them to quit.

Aim, what would happen is.. those who choose to be in the union will still recieve union subsidies (duh), those who are not a part of the union simply will not recieve the subsidies.

If the union dies, that would mean (ta-da) no one wanted it.
As long as people still want it, it will exist...

Ok here is a rant that I originally posted elsewhere (encoded in ROT13, now encoded in ROT26 for your viewing pleasure)
NB: This is a rant, so some things are prone to exaggeration and constant swearing (the following rant contains an MA rating) however many things are true in there.
Uni life:

I wish those stupid VSU preachers at university would just shut the fuck up! Actually correspond that to all student politicians. I don't care that the Jesus Christ is our lord and he will be reborn sometime soon! I don't care that the student unions will be shut down, if it shuts them up I'm all for it. The one thing about VSU I hate is that it makes student politicians talk more then they would otherwise, I am now going to miss out on a lecture (which I still have to pay for!) so left winged hippies (read: anti VSU'ers) can go march around the city and acting like twats. I don't care if Manning and Wentworth and Holme shut down, I don't use them anyway, I don't like paying $2.20 for 600mL of coke when I can get it from the supermarket at $1 a litre at times. I am annoyed not at VSU but that anti VSU supporters get a "free" tshirt which my fees helped pay by signing a stupid petition against VSU. I am more suprised that the environmental collective sees such a waste of paper as useful towards their cause.

I don't care if the ANZ bank is profiting in Iraq. I don't care that 10 000 protested against the US troops in Iraq, when the DEMOCRATICALLY ELECTED president wants them to stay. But oh no it wouldn't be valid since many decided not to vote, for fucks sake many didnt want to vote at the student elections but you still consider there votes as valid.

From the EAG bulletin "Apart from Liberal MP's, Liberal Part members, Liberal students and some other right-wing elements of our society (generally with no knowledge of how universities actually function) support for VSU is pretty much non-existant." Funny about that on polls on BOS it seems pretty much split 50-50! They protest about army recruitment posters on campus! Yet these are the people who fail to see that the army is the main humanitarian force in Australia! Obviously it's ok we should let all those from areas where they aren't oppressed come to Australia into our community without regard to their background, why don't they (the protestors) try and find them (the refugees) a home and job in the community!

They bitch about funding to universities but also about full fee paying students! What makes it all so much worse is that one came into an engineering lecture today (engineering computing) and claimed about how they represent students, which is supposedly a big problem for us engineering students because we all seem to fail subjects due to our high workload, WELL FOR FUCKS SAKE IF THEY ACTUALLY WORKED INSTEAD OF DRANK THEY MIGHT NOT FAIL I dont want to be in a plane or using chemicals that were made or maintained by a student who couldn't handle the uni workload and only got their degree because of the SRC complaining about how their workload is too high. I suspect their workload will be high in their job then, I dont want to have a part missing because they were under a large workload!

and we'll be left with a void that the commercialists will rush in and occupy, making a killiin form us students.

did u know that the SRC and Union ensure that the uni's don't overcharge us for reader packs and lecture notes??

i'm sure u have joined some clubs and societies??? without the union these would not exist as no funding could be allocated. i'll miss the clubs and socs.

a union cannot exist if it is stripped of members. u can't run a union for the greater benefit of the students if only a small group of students support it. the union would downsize til it's power to represent the students is so small that it is no longer a force.

for the record, if u bother to read, i'm a male.

so feminist views was taken as offensive, u have labelled the views of many like minded students, both male and female, to be feminist purely because my avatar is of a female.

shame on u!!!!
I just got that from aim...

Isn't it funny when someone from the left assumes because you disagree with them that you're a misogynist, facist, liar, hitler, nazi, george w bush (like i care?), idiot.

Not that those of us on the right don't do the same (hippie, pinko, etc).

Then only run it for the groups that pay.

I joined some clubs and socities, I have yet to attend a club function (other than a few bbq's) and they were only faculty and political ones.
