can anyone please 'describe one test you would carry out to identify a common ion in a body of water'..

Look in your textbook. There should be tables.

Are you after a specific ion? Because there are a lot. :p

it was actually in the industrial chem option, specimen chem exam 01, the success one book chose nitrate ion but then the method sounds complex, and i am wondering if we can just choose something simpler like copper 2 ion (precipitation and then flame test)

I believe the test for nitrates is the brown-ring test, which is quite annoying.

It depends on whether they're asking you to learn how to identify one specific ion, a cation, or an anion. If you can choose, then pick something easy like Ag+ or SO42-.

oh yeh...i just thought itd be more appropriate for this forum. the book suggests the brown ring test as you said. i kno what to do now, stick to the simpler ions, thanks.
