Hello,

Just wondering how do they count 11 units in the HSC? Im doing 3 unit math, phys, chem, adv eng, bio and psychology 1 unit which gets dropped in yr 12. Do they half the marks of your worst 2 unit subject and fill it with your 1 unit mark or is the 1 unit subject not counted? I was considering not doing 3 unit math because i wont be doing 4 unit math in yr 12 and just doing 2u math, adv eng, bio, chem, phys and economics. Main goal is just to get the highest ATAR possible.

Sincerely, Shinx

All two unit subjects end up as a mark out of 100 while 1 unit courses end up as a mark out of 50 (regardless of how many raw marks are available).

They then take the best two units of English - which may or may not be the Extension levels for those students who do Extension 1 and/or 2.

They then take the next best 8 units regardless of whether it was a one or two unit course.

e.g.

English 88/100 = 2 lots of 44
Maths 94/100 = 2 lots of 47
Ext 1 Maths 44/50 - 1 lot of 44
Modern 93/100 = 2 lots of 46.5 (not rounded for part of the exercise)
History Ext 49/50 = 1 lot of 49
Ext 1 English 46/50 = 1 lot of 46
Legal = 84/100 = 2 lots of 42

So the best two English Units are the Ext 1 at 46 and one of the 2 Units at 44.
The next best 8 units are: History Ext at 49, 2 Unit Maths with 2x47, Modern with 2/46.5, Ext Maths 44 and 2 Unit English 44 leaving only 1 unit of Legal at 42

Total out of 500 = 458 which would be the total used for the ATAR

I have deliberately put together an HSC with lots of extensions just to hopefully illustrate how the units are used in this calculation.

So hypothetically, for my subjects it would be

Maths 2 unit 90/100 = 2 lots of 45
Maths ext 1 unit 49/50 = 1 lot of 49
English advanced 92/ 100 = 2 lots of 46
Physics 94/100 = 2 lots of 47
Chemistry 96/100 = 2 lots of 46
Biology 88/100 = 2 lots of 44

So would they remove half of my bio score and replace it with my maths extension making it (44+49) + 90 + 92+ 94 + 96 = 465/500

Also is that mark for the HSC considered good ?

Man, that's close to a 98-99 atar, although a 88 in bio is worth more than 90 in math so when UAC scales your marks, 1 unit of 2u will only count and you would probs get a scaled 448+/500

If you're referring to HSC marks, then the addition you have done is completely wrong for calculating atar.

Your atar is calculated through the addition of scaled marks.

Oh right well scaling would be added but like fundamentally thats how the 1 unit course is added to my atar, right ?
