Hey guys, to all those who do B Social Science, how it it? Is it fun? What does the 'core' of the degree involve?
What careers are you aiming for by doing this degree? Is it good for getting into politics/govenment?
Is the B Social Science at Macq better than the B Social Science degree at UNSW, what are your opinions? Not really sure which uni to go to for this degree
Any other info on the degree would be great as well
Thanks!
Hi, I'm in my first year doing a B Social Science. It's a pretty flexible degree and you can do pretty much any unit you like in it (so long as it's not some specialised science or psychology unit or something). There a variety of programs of study to choose from in this degree- I'm doing sociology; some others are human geography, anthropology, demography and the like (nothing too humanities and nothing too sciencey- it's like social science is right on the line between humanities and science).
Here's a link to a full list of the programs of study you can do in the B Social Science:

While you might not have to do some of the core units in your program of study until second year, it's a good idea to look ahead at what the requirements are for those units in case it requires you to have done a first year unit or something.
Macq is regarded as a good uni for humanities and social sciencey subjects so I'd say that this is a good place to go, UNSW wouldn't be much better as far as I'm concerned. Which uni is 'better' is all a matter of perspective really.
Social science is a good degree for politics and that kind of thing depending on what field you're looking to go into specifically and what program of study you choose in the degree. Politics is a program of study you can choose.
Personally, I don't know what I want to do with this degree at the moment. Originally I wanted to do this degree and transfer into combined law at some stage... at the moment I don't know any more though. But that's just me. So far I have enjoyed the degree and I'm really enjoying sociology, but who knows what I'll end up doing in the end.
Hope all that gave some insight into your questions!
