wrong forum buddy! but put simply, they just didnt have the technology to study and understand them as we do, and they saw things like erruptions and volcanic/seismic activity as a reflection of the gods, eg angry god

also, vesuvius had been dorment for a very very very long time, and many assumed it was just a mountain, and had no idea what was going on during the eruption until it was too late
