What is this text about?
This text is about a man who neglects his son throughout the boy's childhood. The man is always too busy with himself and when time changes the man has more free time. The father is beginning to realise that his son has no time for him as he has grown up.

How does it link to inner journey?
This text links to inner journey because the father throughout the poem comes to the realisation that his relationship with his son has become distant. This is apparent because the father sees how he treated his son in his early childhood and now the son has reflected his traits. Also the majority of the childhood was spent away from his child, which now is ironic because the son doesn’t have enough time for him. The son’s inner journey is thinking that it’s normal to treat his father the way he got treated, but is not doing this intentionally. Whilst the father’s inner journey is realising that he wasn’t there for his son and now time is crucial.

What techniques have been used?
The most apparent techniques used in this text is the rhyming pattern. This creates an easy flow and pattern of the song. Also in every second stanza there is a different stage of the son’s life. The text also has an extended metaphor as it contrasts the son and the father’s relationship. In the beginning the father had no time for his son, and now when the father requests to see his son, the son has no time for him. This extended metaphor could also be seen as irony as the father is receiving the same condition he gave to his son. Another obvious technique used are the different tenses. In the beginning of the song the father describes the past, in which his son grew up without him, and at the end as being the present tense.

The song has also been written in a conversational structure as it gives readers a sense of casualty and an understandable concept of the father’s complex relationship with his son. Another technique used is that every second stanza, the first two lines are repetitive. This suggests and emphasizes the distance between the father and the son.
