N ND Guest Nov 2, 2003 #2 Well basically, the bacteria reduce sulfate to hydrogen sulfide: SO4(2-) + H2O + e(-) --> HS(-) + OH(-) (i'm not gonna bother balancing) which provides a pathway for the electrons released in the oxidation of iron: Fe --> Fe(2+) + e(-)
