HELP !!!!! - Binding energy quanta to quarks (1 Viewer)

Two days before the exam I have realized I have no idea about binding energy.
In my text (contexts 2 p483) calculations show that in a fission reaction the binding energy of the products is greater then the original uranium atom?
Wouldnt this mean the reaction is taking in energy rather then giving it out?
If any one has any idea it would be so helpful

just a thought, but could it be that the extra mass comes from the neutrons that have spurred the fission?

Because your right, the mass of the reactants will be more than the mass of the products.

I will do a worked example from the jacaranda book:

thanx I can understand the concept when it is done like that but our text book takes a different approach.
It asks us to calculate the difference in the binding energy not the mass ?????????
And do we get the mass of the reactants/ products from the periodic table?

u convert mass into energy, mass from the mass number on periodic table, conversion rates on the data sheet
