Picked up this laptop yesterday from JBHifi for my sister:

HP DV51139TX
2.53Ghz Centrino 2
nVidia GeForce 9600mGT (512mb dedicated graphics)
4gb DDR2 ram
400Gb HDD
Litescribe DVD burner
Vista Home Premium (loaded with useless HP shit which I removed asap)
15.1inch screen

For $1600. The price was originally $2300 and it was on sale for $1900. Pretty good deal imo considering she'll be getting $750 back from the government so the final price is $850. It's a pretty nice looking laptop too, I really like the silver.
So yeah, if you are after a laptop check out JBHifi.

Edit: The online catalogue says that the sale ends today (17/2/09) but I'm sure you can bargain them down to sale prices and lower.

That is definitely an awesome deal right there.

I'm looking for a new laptop, but I'll wait till I get my $900 before I start doing some more serious research.

Myer have the same laptop deal that i got mine with:

Asus M51Va, 2.53ghz dual core, 4gigs ram, 320gig harddrive, 512mb ati hd 3650 dedicated gfx, vista ultimate 32-bit, dvd rw, 15.4" screen, comes with carry bag, mouse, external 250gig harddrive, ms home and office 07 all for $1999.
I got mine last year around september for around $1500 (display model, plus employee discount).

Better than the op's deal i reckon, though the 9600m gt is a bit better than ati hd 3650, mine came with bag, mouse, 250gig external harddrive and ms office 07.

Never, ever buy HP. 4.5 months on, still waiting for a refund on my defective laptop.

If it doesn't appear on the next CC statement (as they've guaranteed it will) will be giving instructions to a Solicitor.

My HP just fucking died and I've been waiting for three weeks for the HP guy to ring me back so I can send it back to them.
Ring them back and ask what's happening. With mine they had the guy managing my refund leave the company, not pass on the fact that my money needed to be refunded, and they didn't forward his emails to the general pool, so essentially I was trying to communicate with a non-existent employee.

That rules out a HP laptop for me.

Balancing between Asus (Im 98% sure cause Omi Jay's laptop rocks), Toshiba (although considered heavy), Dell (always thought they were a piece of shit, however they have A-list ratings with the XPS lappys).

You could contact your bank and do a charge back.

I think I'm going to pick up the mediocre compaq laptop at JB too for $898 or something.
Their deals are too competitive

Compaq laptops are made by HP. Read the thread and understand why this is a bad idea.

By the way, I just noticed that the person who bought the laptop, bought a HP and everyone is saying that it's a great deal....

So is it wrong to say he wasted his money?
