i think this is an easy one since basically any text can be used for changing self... however stuff i found was good included
angela's ashes (both the book and the film directed by parker)
thelma and louise (film directed by ridley scott)
educating rita (play by russel--> very, very good!)
to kill a mockingbird (not fantastic but easy to get notes on and stuff if you're the sort of person that needs them to understand a text)
the great gatsby (novel by fitzgerald--> this is brilliant if you're prepared for a fairly complex analysis, it's not the sort of text you want to pick up the night before your trails tho)
anything by the bronte sisters! (not necessarily jane eyre since that's already a prescribed text but villette, wuthering heights...)
good luck!

Educating Rita is very good, I second it as a text for self change (although it isn't really for males, I found, but meh.)

Also, for movies, I like Three Kings, excellent for changing self OR perspective...

And TIME magazine always has good feature articles on changing self, such as the ones about John Walker-Lindh and Michael Waugh.
