Basically, the ice is melting too fast: http://www.physorg.com/news147232247.html

At the top of the list for virtually all of the scientists canvassed was the rapid melting of the Arctic ice cap.

"In the last couple of years, Arctic Sea ice is at an all-time low in summer, which has got a lot of people very, very concerned," commented Robert Watson, Chief Scientific Advisor for Britain's department for environmental affairs and chairman of the IPCC's previous assessment in 2001.

"This has implication's for Earth's climate because it can clearly lead to a positive feedback effect," he said in an interview.

When the reflective ice surface retreats, the Sun's radiation -- heat -- is absorbed by open water rather than bounced back into the atmosphere, creating a vicious circle of heating.

"We had always known that the Arctic was going to respond first," said Mark Serreze of the National Snow and Ice Data Center in Boulder, Colorado. "What has us puzzled is that the changes are even faster than we would have thought possible," he said by phone.

New data on the rate at which oceans might rise has also caused consternation.

"The most recent IPCC report was prior to ... the measurements of increasing mass loss from Greenland and Antarctica, which are disintegrating much faster than IPCC estimates," said climatologist James Hansen, head of NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies in New York.
Meanwhile, Rudd creates a multi-million dollar joint Australian-Indonesian disaster relief centre to preempt the coming storm: http://www.theage.com.au/national/rudd-pledges-67m-for-indonesia-disaster-centre-20081123-6eq5.html

Another study finds that less than a 2 degree temperature increase could trigger run-away ice sheet meltdown: http://www.physorg.com/news147001400.html

Someone please close this topic. We already have many threads on climate change. If there were a new thread for every new study or finding, there would be hundreds of thousands of pointless threads on boredostudies.org. (Most of them, like this one, based on incorrect information.)

Who's predicting a 2 degree temperature increase except Al Gore? That would be... no one. Also, this study was done by the WWF (known alarmists) and it is yet to be peer reviewed. So this is just blatant misinformation.

TREFOIL'S QUESTIONABLE SOURCE

Here's a quote from Trefoil's source (it's no wonder Trefoil's so misinformed):

During the 1970s, there were on average 1.3 parts per million (ppm) of carbon dioxide -- the main greenhouse gas -- in the air. In the 1980s the figure was 1.6 ppm, and in the 1990s 1.5 ppm.
I've put in bold glaring proof that the authors do not know what they are talking about. They say that carbon dioxide is the main greenhouse gas. WRONG.

The fact is that the main greenhouse gas is water vapour. Carbon dioxide is not the main greenhouse gas, it is however what anthropogenic climate change believers, against all evidence, claim contributes most to climate change, as it is this greenhouse gas which is changing most, in concentration.

COMMENTS ON TREFOIL'S SOURCE

Also make sure you take a look at the comments on the link that Trefoil provided, I reproduced parts of the first 3 - so much for evidence eh Trefoil?

NEClimate change gathers steam, say journalists.
Independent Comment TWO said:
Reading through this article I could not help but notice many "weasel" words, such as "appears to be", "suggests that", "may be driven", "may be triggering", "oceans might rise", "would put", "I think", "Were Greenland's", "could prove", "informal consensus", "some scientists" and "could be released". It almost seems that "some scientists" are hedging their bets.

Also who wrote this?

"During the 1970s, there were on average 1.3 parts per million (ppm) of carbon dioxide -- the main greenhouse gas -- in the air. In the 1980s the figure was 1.6 ppm, and in the 1990s 1.5 ppm."

The previous sentence from the article is simply incorrect.

These politically motivated dispatches from Hansen, Serreze and other activist scientists should not be published by physorg, since the articles promote political, rather than, scientific debate.

Independent Comment THREE said:
again this scam agenda from the illuminati elite

watch new article of how actually glaciars starterd to grow ans snow depozits

i couldn't care less. i'm gonna be dead by the time global warming has any real, significant effects.

I think that deniers should be dealt with appropriately (purifying fire, drowing etc) for their superstitious, BLASPHEMOUS ways

Rephrase, or the denier will think that there is no such thing as the greenhouse effect keeping us alive.

:p

Good time to take swimming lessons? Either that, or build an ark.

Wrong. My cellular aerobic activity keeps me warm - not the atmosphere.

Oh God bless you precious, precious mitochondria!

I wonder how warm your mitochondria would keep you on the moon :p

What will be the effects of sea ice melting? Raised sea levels?

Else the spirit of the Lord helps warm my soul.

Sadly it does not warm my earthly body.

But this is inconsequential in the long run.

Well, it's not the SEA ice that's the main problem - it's ice on land (i.e. Greenland and the majority of Antarctica).

Can't we simply pump epic amounts of CFC's under the Greenland ice sheets to prevent it from thawing?

Too thick. I wouldn't diffuse into the ice quick enough to prevent the surface from melting.

Also, CFCs, if it got into the atmosphere, would kind of compound the problem don't you think?
