It would depend on supply and demand, I think.

In order to get and keep a job, you'd also have to be well educated and keep up to date.

There are plently of prospects for the budding software engineer

*False smile falls off faces and smashes on floor*

Who know's what it will be like in 4/5 years. My lecturers are predicting a resurgance of the IT boom, and I can only hope that it will pick up ...

how could I forget about the .NET framework (microsoft).
that's always popular, what with longhorn going into beta next year, the new visual studio, office system (2003), the whole kit and kaboodle.

programming isn't my thing though ;)
but i know where you're coming from.
it's going to be BIG!

the thing with programming is, its not secure for ur whole life

once u are 40-50 ish and ur salary is fairly good, companies tend to replace u for younger, cheaper, and perhaps more skilled (not so much more experienced) programmers

it is at that time most lifelong programmers turn to the managerial side

Linux is going to be in demand very soon... since microfsoft is embedding all the new privacy laws into processors, people will need a cheap alternative... :D

Linux all the way...!!!
