has anyone ever done this upon applying to uni?....(pay for one year and continue with HECS second yr onwards).

What would you have to do to accomplish this?

better contact student centre.
I think they send you payment forms before each semester asking you the required amount. I think there was an option on the back to defer it or someting.
Call or see the student centre, they'll give you a definite answer

If you start off as a fee-paying student (which is different to paying HECS upfront), you'll need to apply to transfer to a HECS position.

This is essentially the same as transferring between degrees.
