In terms of education, doing marketing/communications/pr would certainly be helpful. There are also tafe courses in event management and public relations.
As far as I am aware though, contacts are really quite important and volunteering is a fantastic way to start. I applied for a student leader position at my uni and now I am in the middle of organising our first handmade art and craft market. I know of others who have volunteered with local festivals or music events in their town and then eventually their contacts lead them somewhere.
There's always work experience, too. Approach a PR practitioner or a marketing firm and ask to do some unpaid work experience
