Enzymes are biological catalysts. Some textbooks say that catalysts only speed up reactions, whereas other state that they can either speed up or slow down reactions.

So, what's more correct?

Generally speaking, enzymes actually speed up reactions. However, you can say they also slow down reactions because other enzymes may convert "product" produced from one enzyme back into the "substrate". Does this make sense?

enzymes are biological catalysts comprised of protein. they predominantly speed up reactions, making them occur at a faster rate then what the reaction would occur without the enzyme. make sense?

Technically they do both.

Had a huge argument with my bio teacher about it.

Turns out I was right

But generally they increase the rate of reaction.

enzymes dont literally speed up a reaction, they lower the activation energy for that reaction
