Isn't Asian just one language? I thought like the China people spoke Asian. I'm confused. How can there be an 'easy' Asian language when there's only one?

LMAO at the poster who said Cantonese is easier to learn than Mandarin. Cantonese has more tones, and most of the time, the spoken language is a lot different than the written language.

cantonese is pretty much only useful if you want to work in HK.
Mandarin is useful if you want to work around asian countries.

so Mandarin >>>> cantonese in terms of usefulness. i'd honestly be surprised if ANU even offered courses on cantonese.

thats what my teacher said too- however twas pretty challenging
things are said back to front in sentences
but once you pick up all that type of stuff, its good

Having had a hand at cantonese, mandarin and japanese, I'd say if you're native-english speaking, then Japanese would be the easiest to grasp.

especially considering this thread is in relation to studying at a tertiary institution.

yes spoken japanese is considerably easier than written japanese.

because i mean you only need to know like 1,954 characters with multiple readings in order to be proficient enough in japanese in order to read at a universoty level.

Multiple readings isn't an issue because it won't make sense if you read it one way. This is the written equivalent of using varying tones (if you wanted to compare the two methods). Speaking is easier at first, although to speak the language well takes alot longer than learning to write it. And to be honest you could get pretty far without knowing more than a 1000 or so kanji, just means you can't read the newspaper there.
