In essence a genre is a collection of recurring conventions - whether it be crime fiction's nosy old women or fantasy's boy hero - that the responder almost assumes a text will have. However these conventions change and adapt to reflect social values, and therefore the genre evolves and survives to fight another day. This is a very basic definition, but the thought process would apply to romance ie romance continues to tittilate audiences through the eras because it has changed along with its audiences - the audiences of medieval romance is different from that of mills and boon in what way? and what effect does this have on the texts?
