I have been accepted into a Bachelor Of Engineering (Flexible FIrst year) and I have a few questions I would like answered:

1st: I actually wanted to get into Bachelor Of Engineering/Bachelor Of Science (Combined Degree) but I missed out by a measley 0.40 points...I have heard that one can attend an interview in which I could possibly be accepted into it considering I had done Physics and Extension 1 Maths in my HSC. Does anyone know if there is any truth in this, and if there is what are the requirements? Is it an interview or based on what you know or what has been studied?

2nd: With a double degree, what exactly happens? Does it mean that for instance if I did a double degree B Engineering / B Science, that I just study the core elements of an engineering and science course. Or Will I end up choosing a particular elective such as B Engineering( Mechatronic) and B Science (Chemistry). What I am asking is, with a double degree, do I still get to choose which strand of engineering and science I want to do...Or in a double degree is it just the basics of both degrees?

3rd. Where would I find out what subjects are involved in the Double degree...and which ones will be credited to (as in I dont have to do if I get enough credit points?)

1st: goto/ring student centre and ask... search it online maybe too, esp in the hand book of sci/eng...

2nd: double degree imo is better (slightly) than a combine... for a double, u get ur degree after u completed the required subjects in one degree and then u progress futher into the 2nd degree... and i believe, like combined degree, u do need to choose ur major /minor in ur specific degree... so yes, u do have to say: i wanna do chem in sci/mechatronics in eng etc...

3rd: hand book is a good place to start... they are usually free to view at faculty office... or u may view online hand books or purchase one at student center...

yes, when you enrol in a combined degree you have choose your engineering stream (there is no general engineering course). What is meant by only doing core subjects is that the electives that are normally taken as part of your engineering degree are taken up by your other degree.

Eg. a normal 4 year engineering course has 196 credit point i think. 144 of these are core units and the remainder are electives. For me, i do 144 of civil engineering core units but i dont get to choose my specialisation. Normally civil engineering students choose electives (144 + electives) to specialise in either structural, construction, project management...
But because of my combined degree i only do the core units (144) and then i do 96 units for commerce, totalling 250.

Im not sure about engineering/science but im sure its very similar. You will also be studying the two courses simultanously during the year.

For info on engineering(mechatronic)/science refer to

subjects for mechatronic

and this is helpful too

by the way flexible first year sux ass unless you have no idea what engineering you wanna do yet..
unfurtunately civil and chemical engineerings ARE MADE to take the same subjects as flexible first year. For chemical engineering thats good since chemistry is involved. But for civils like myself its fucked since chemistry is gay and i dont want to learn about stupid quantum electron shit!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!arrgghh
also ENGG1800 kinda sux too, the only thing is that its a good budge but they make you do 4 weeks in each department, that is civil, chemical and AMME, so its good if you havnt decided what you want to do because you get to test them all out but it sux if you have allready chosen civil or other streams like aero.

PHYS1901 I'm doing instead of ENGG1802(I think, whatever Eng Mechanics is), and the maths units count for both degrees.

It is possible to do 2 years of engineering, then switch to science, then come back to engineering for the last year. You'll get your 2 degrees while enrolled in only engineering now. Ask the engineering office for more detail.

And vector calculus is shared next year as well. Well, it will count towards your maths major.

Can you do any two degrees as a double degree or are there specified ones you have to choose?

@acmilan... i think double degree is one very special case... as far as i know, only eng/sci offers double... so u won't see alot of thema round..

combined, however, u see them everywhere...

btw, for combined degree, u dun get ur degree til ur 5thyr...

Ive already tried to get a combined IT/Science but they wouldnt let me so i guess its worth a shot asking for a double IT and Science or IT and Engineering. I dont see what the problem is considering IT is in effect an advanced science degree.
