Yes, they would have been told by their CO's and NCO's not to send sensitive details home. It is obvious that the media and war correspondants wouldn't tell or tell the public about major operations untill they happened to further jeporadise soldiers lives, etc.

Also some countries bought in censorship boards/bureaus. Letters going to other countries from the home front or from soldiers could also be screened, edited and so on.
