I was flicking through conquering chem and chem contexts and the two cells are different. well, theyre similar but yeah. In conq chem, the diaphragm and the membrane look exactly the same, its the their membrane, but in contexts, theyre struturally different. Can someone veryfiy with me which one is correct ?

also, whats a disadvantage with the membrane process ?

Diaphragm cell

I can assure you that the membrane and diaphragm cell are structurally alike. The only difference is that the membrane cell has an improved diaphragm made of Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) which incorporates anionic groups so that only Na+ ions pass through (hence no chlorine contamination in final NaOH). I havent come across many disadvantages but someone once suggested that it is more expensive as the PTFE membrane is more expensive than that of asbestos in the diaphragm cell. Hope that clarifies things for you :)
