"Do androids dream of electric sheep?", but I don't know the author ...

The context? The 80's were the time of big money, big corporations and enviromental disaster ...

Just think about "the cold war", the comming of the computer, and the emergence of large multi-national companies ...

The bigger event is the reintroduction right wing conservatism (under reagan) to the U.S. After the years of revolution in the 1960's and 1970's, this return to conservative policy saw much unrest in the lower classes (unions shut down, cold war paranoia, budget cuts of medical and education systems etc).

Also, Reagan economic policy saw much power being placed in the hands of private business and corporations, hence the 'agressive advertising' and supremity of transnational corporations in the film

Blade runner was made in 1982.
Reagan was in office 1981-1989.

this was not seven years late.
