hi, i just want some advice on which course to choose for next year
im considering either computer science or software engineering but dont know which one would be best for me.
im interested in networking/security maintanence and programming.

also, what is the main difference between the courses? is it just the flexibility available in compsci?

Software Engineering is more rigid, yes, but it has automatic honours and has a greater leadership/project management focus in every year and a more interesting postgrad, so I've been told. First year is more or less the same for both degrees.

You will learn programming in both degrees (but more importantly, you'll also learn software design, independent of any languages).

You can choose a Networking Specialization in Computer Science http://www.computing.unsw.edu.au/computerscience.php .

Security is covered in a few Courses, and there are some Electives that you can take as well like:
Security Engineering http://www.handbook.unsw.edu.au/undergraduate/courses/2011/COMP3441.html
Advanced Computer Security http://www.handbook.unsw.edu.au/undergraduate/courses/2011/COMP4442.html

There is a good comparison of our Programs at http://www.computing.unsw.edu.au/comparison.php . You can also come along to our Open Day this Saturday.

i'd want to work for the government or police in the defence area. like on tv when theres crime scenes, and theres people who use computers to assist in solving the case. would that fall under software engineering? or would computer science be more suitable?
hope i make sense :S

Sorry for the slow reply. We have an unofficial stream in Computer Science called Computer Forensics (the paperwork to get it official hasn't been completed yet). However, you can probably do all of these electives under Software Engineering as well.
