I saw another thread on this question involving the difference between Ethylene and Ethene, so I decided to make a thread as my response is fairly long, and it is pretty useful information.
Question: "Discuss the diff. btw ethylene & ethene?"
Response:
Throughout the history of mankind, many different languages possess multiple words or phrases that describe the same thing. Although this is the case, many differences are still evident between them, as seen through the provided example of ethylene and ethene. These differences can be seen through a mathematical analysis and grammatical analysis of these two words.
Firstly, a grammatical analysis can be used to pinpoint the differences of the two words. A grammatical analysis shows us that the word ethylene is spelt different from the word ethene. The word ethylene comprises of an extra 'yl' than ethene. Because of this, that is why they are spelt differently. This also explains why they have different amount of letters; ethylene having 8, while ethene having 6. Consequently, this has led to ethylene having 3 syllables while ethene only comprises of 2.
A mathematical analysis can also be used in conjunction with a grammatical analysis to emphasise the differing nature of these two words. The word ethylene comprises of eight letters in total, 3 e's, 1 t, 1 h, 1 y, 1 l, and 1 n. E is the 5th letter in the alphabet while T, H, Y, L, and N, are the 20th, 8th, 25th, 12th, and 14th letters respectively. Because of this, a substitution can be undertaken to determine the mathematical value of ethylene. Hence, this substitution occurs as follows, E = 5, T = 20, H = 8, Y = 25, L = 12, and N = 14. Furthermore, Ethylene = 5*20*8*25*12*5*14*5 = 16 800 000. When studying Ethene, we can determine it = 5*20*8*5*14*5 = 280 000. When comparing these two numbers, the number of digits of the output is equal to the number of letters of the words. Ethene is a six letter word, and its mathematical output is 280 000, which is a six digit number. The same can be seen for Ethylene which has eight letters and digits. This is the link between the mathematical and grammatical analysis.
Overall, although the two words of ethylene and ethene describe and mean the same thing, many differences can still be pinpointed between these words as evident through the grammatical and mathematical analysis.
